Girl in A Coma
San Antonio, Texas band Girl In A Coma will be at Plush in Tucson, Arizona on July 24th. The all-female rock band are touring in support of their new record, Trio B.C. which will be released later this summer. Lead singer Nina Díaz was 12 years old when the band started in 2005, her sister is the band’s drummer Phanie Díaz, and her childhood friend, Jenn Alva is the bassist. The band’s first record, the 2005 EP Gira O Morir catapulted the band to super stardom and into the desk of label woman and rock legend Ms. Jett. She signed them to her Blackheart Records and released their first full length, Both Before I’m Gone in 2007. Girl In A Coma’s music can best be described as alternative rock albeit with a Morrissey influence. The band’s name is a reference to The Smith’s tune “Girlfriend in a Coma.” In late 2007, the band opened up for Morrissey and has since then opened up for Frank Black, Tega & Sara, and The Pogues and are SXSW veterans.
Trio B.C. is produced by Grammy-winning producer, Greg Collings (U2, Gwen Stefani), Gabriel Gonzalez (former band member of El Paso band Sparta), and Joan Jett. Their website describes the band’s new album as “exploring different styles and tempos with tracks ranging from the eerie and poetic love song “El Monte” to the fast and hard rocking “Static Mind.” Other tracks include the delicate ballad “Pink Lemonade” and the more sonically experimental “Ven Cerca,” Girl in a Coma’s first Spanish language song, a cover of a bright 1960s Mexican pop song, but made modern and dissonant with feedback and fuzzy guitars reminiscent of Sonic Youth at their grungiest best.”
