Gustavo Cerati's new record Fuerza Natural drops in August

Argentine rocker and former band member of Soda Stereo, Gustavo Cerati has recorded a new album. Fuerza Natrual will be released in late August. His first single, “Déja Vu” can be heard exclusively on his official website. You can also read the lyrics to his new song on his website. Fuerza Natural is Cerati’s fifth full-length solo work preceding perhaps his most critically acclaimed work, 2006’s Ahí Vamos. An album that saw Cerati leaving his electronic-sophisticated pop orchestrations (I think he might have given those to Shakira‘s last record, albeit with some serious mixed results) behind for a direct guitar rock approach. That record, unlike his first three, spawned five hit singles all over Latin America and earned him a few Grammy nominations and spots on year-end lists. Quite long overdue, I think, as Cerati has spent the last few decades earning respect for his long body of work outside of the shadow of his legendary band. It doesn’t matter if you prefer sophisti-pop Cerati over rocker Cerati, or even prefer Cerati pre-solo work, listening to “Déja Vu” (or any new work) makes Mí Casa news, and our day! Note: what’s with Requiem For A Dream look? We’re unsure if this is his album cover. Note 2: Check out pre-solo work Cerati here.

Los Lobos sign with Shout! Factory, Complete New Kids Album, Continue 2009 Tour and New Album

Los Lobos

Los Lobos

Earlier this year, the band from East L.A., Los Lobos, signed with a new record label, Shout! Factory (home of Rhett Miller, Matthew Sweet, Susana Hoffs) after getting dropped by Hollywood Records where the band recorded one of its most lauded records, 2006’s The Town & The City. Back in June, the band’s multi-instrumentalist, Steve Berlin, spoke with Billboard.com about their label switch. Berlin says the band was very active in listening to pitches from labels and felt Shout! Factory best fit their needs. Berlin explains that with a label in place Los Lobos can start determining a recording schedule and when new material will need to be written. The band has one more album on Hollywood Records due out in November. The record is a children’s album of classic Disney songs. Los Lobos are no strangers to children’s albums. In 1995, the band recorded In Papa’s Dreams with Lalo Guerrero, a collection of children’s narratives set to music. This new album, explains Berlin, has a “conceptual framework… we interpreted classic Disney songs like ‘Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah,’ ‘When You Wish Upon A Star’ and ‘I Wanna Be Like You (The Monkey Song). There are no Elton John-era Disney tracks. But it came out really good, and we’re all happy with it.” There’s a new record in the works, their 18th LP coming soon. In the meantime, Los Lobos will be touring (as they always do, bless them!).

Os Mutantes release Haih, first record in 35 years

Os Mutantes

Os Mutantes

Brazilian psychedlic/tropicalia masters Os Mutantes announced the release of their first record in over 35 years. Haih will be released on ANTI Records home of such artists as Antibalas, Nick Cave, Blackalicious, Daniel Lanois, Mavis Staples, N.A.S.A. and Tom Waits, on September 8th. Os Mutantes were formed in 1966 in São Paulo, Brazil by two brothers Arnaldo and Sergio Dias Baptista with vocal duties by Rita Lee. The band were heavily influenced at the time by The Bealtes, Jimi Hendrix, and Sly & The Family Stone, and in turn Os Mutantes have influenced the likes of Kurt Cobain, Kevin Barnes (Of Montreal), Beck, The Talking Heads as well as many other acts. This news comes with much anticipation as the group reunited in 2006 (without Rita Lee) and played a string of shows with Flaming Lips, Tom Zé, and Devandra Barnhart. Late last year, Os Mutantes released a new track, “Mutantes Depois” as a digital download. The song featured vocals by Bia Mendes and Fabio Recco. It is unknown yet whether Rita Lee will return as lead vocalist.

Os Mutantes’ Haih will be out on September 8th on ANTI Records.
