Lila Down’s Collection of Hits and Tour

Lila Downs

Our Mex soul sister, Lila Downs, has just released her first collection of hits titled, “The Very Best of El Alma de Lila Downs.” The collection has 18 tracks, including some of my personal favorite Lila tunes—“Paloma Negra,” “Arenita Azul” and “Naila”. This Oaxaqueña can rock a cumbia, sing with a Nahuatl tongue, and command a mariachi with her voice. Check her out if she’s in your area.

Song of the Day: Juana Molina’s “Rudo Y Cursi”

Juana Molina

Juana Molina

Singer-songwriter Juana Molina needs very little introduction. She was already a household name in her native Argentina as a comedic television actress. In the last decade, Molina has made a name for herself as a premiere eclectic musician releasing a string of critical lauded independent releases that span a wide variety of genres: electronic, folk, ambient, and pop. Her 1996 debut, Rara introduced Molina as a prolific songwriter. Her 2002 release, Tres Cosas cemented a unique musician often drawing comparisons to other prolific muscians such as Beth Orton and Björk. Molina couldn’t be any more different than Orton and Björk, yet what Molina shares with these two women is their unique artistry. If you ever get a chance to catch Juana Molina in concert, do it. She’s incredibly funny, a master storyteller, and she creates a wall of sound with her voice alone. Molina’s last two releases 2006’s Son and last year’s Un Día were released on U.K.’s Domino Records. She was the first Spanish speaking muscian to land on that label. Today’s song of the day is Molina’s quirky theme to the Gael Garcia Bernal/Diego Luna dramedy Rudo Y Cursi. On “Rudo Y Cursi” Molina sings about the lives of both characters backed by an ambient drumbeat and acoustic gutiar.
